Lisa Durden came to national attention when she appeared on Fox News defending a blacks-only event marking Memorial Day. During her interview, Durden said, “boo hoo hoo, you white people are angry because you couldn’t use your white privilege card to get invited to the Black Lives Matter’s all-black Memorial Day celebration.”[1] Durden was subsequently suspended and ultimately fired for her remarks. Essex County College President Anthony Munroe responded by saying that “the school was immediately inundated with feedback from students, faculty and prospective students and their families expressing frustration, concern and even fear that the views expressed by a college employee (with influence over students) would negatively impact their experience on the campus… Racism cannot be fought with more racism.”[2]

Durden has claimed that the school “publicly lynched” her, and “compared her experience to a rape victim who is blamed for the crime, and a person who returns from war to a hostile environment.”[3]

On July 25, 2017, Durden announced she would be running for New Jersey Lieutenant Governor on the Green Party ticket along Seth Kaper-Dale.[4]
