Prof. Yancy came to public attention when, in 2015, he published an op-ed in the New York Times entitled ‘Dear White America,’ in which he argued that all white Americans are racist by virtue of their being white. In his piece, Yancy asked that white America examine “the racist poison that is inside of you,” and that “if you are white, and you are reading this letter, I ask that you don’t run to seek shelter from your own racism.” [1]

In response to negative feedback for his piece, Yancy responded in a subsequent op-ed, lamenting that “I had thought that I had been marked enough – as bestial, as criminal, and inferior. I have always known of the existence of that racialized scarlet letter.”[2]
