Prof. Al Halabi has long been accused of harboring and promoting radical Islamist ideologies and anti-Semitism. The Islamic Center of Boca Raton (ICBR) which he co-founded has, for example, been exposed for its connection to extremist entities, “including having a website that featured links to terrorist charities and an essay that stated Jews are ‘known for their treachery and corruption throughout the world.”
Al Halabi was at one time the research assistant for former University of South Florida professor Sami Al-Arian, who was the North American leader of Palestinian Islamic Jihad. In 2003, the U.S. Department of Commerce found Al Halabi guilty of illegally shipping a $13,000 military-grade thermal imaging device to Syria “in violation of the EAR [Export Administration Regulations].” Al Halabi has also been associated to many known extremists, such as one of his ICBR co-incorporators Syed Khawer Ahmad, who is known for his connections to Hamas. Another ICBR member was Rafiq Sabir who, in 2007, was sentenced to 25 years in prison for conspiring to provide material support to al-Qaeda.
At a Muslim Students Association-sponsored “Islamophobia” conference at FAU in 2016, Al Halabi justified the Sharia Law practice of cutting off a thief’s hands as a means of reducing crime. Qualifying his point, Al Halabi argued that “where there is no Sharia, Islamic Sharia, they die in dozens and hundreds every day because of organized crime.”
