Areej Zufari came to wider attention when, in March 2017, a student of hers was suspended, allegedly following a heated disagreement with Zufari. The student, Marshall Polston, was suspended (and later reinstated) after challenging Prof. Zufari’s claim that Jesus’ crucifixion was a hoax. Zufari allegedly also took no issue with a Muslim student in her class in a conversation about Sharia law who stated that “a good punishment for gays, adulterers, and thieves was the removal of a certain body part, as determined by Sharia law.”
Between 2001 to at least 2004, Zufari also served as the spokesperson and Director of Communications for the Islamic Society of Central Florida (ISCF). ISCF’s main Mosque is owned by the North American Islamic Trust (NAIT), a Muslim Brotherhood sister-organization which “was classified by federal prosecutors as both an unindicted co-conspirator in the 2008 Holy Land foundation terrorism financing case and as an entity that is or was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood.” Furthermore, ISCF has been implicated in terrorism fundraising activities such as its sponsorship in 2009 of an event that raised money for George Galloway’s ‘Viva Palestina’, which has been alleged to be a financial conduit to Hamas.
Following the incidents on the Rollins campus, a Central Florida Post report accused Zufari of having “multiple terrorist ties.” According to a 2007 lawsuit against Zufari, she has been engaged in a long-term affair with Maher Ghawji, a Syrian immigrant with ties to the Muslim Brotherhood and al-Qaeda. Ghawji’s wife Rosine (who brought about the lawsuit), also accused Zufari of trying to indoctrinate her children with jihadist beliefs. Furthermore, Rosine reportedly provided the FBI with correspondences between her husband and terrorist organizations where he claims that Zufari is “just as guilty” and that the two made several trips to conduct “targeting and surveillance” of American interests in Seattle. Lastly, the report accuses Zufari of spearheading the effort to bring Sheikh Abdur-Rahman Al-Sodas, an imam who commanded the “annihilation” of Jews and the death of Americans, to the US. Zufari was also reportedly involved in raising funds for Imam Siraj Wihaj, a Muslim leader who was designated by the U.S. Attorney as a co-conspirator in the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center.
