Prof. Jhally has been accused over the years of anti-American and anti-Semitic behavior. He has, for example, tweeted that advertising and capitalism “will be responsible for the deaths of millions,” that, “The New Republican Party – American Terrorists,” and that members of the Supreme Court are “frat-boy fascists.”[1]

Jhally has also lamented the posthumous “demonization of Hugo Chavez,” by the media following the dictator’s death. He has also been implicated in promoting 9/11 truther theories following the attacks, eventually settling for claiming that they were “blowback for our foreign policy.” Jhally has also claimed that “anti-Semitism in the Arab world, in fact, doesn’t exist until well into the 20th century. It exists, in a huge way, of course, among Christian nations.” He maintains that “Jews were using anti-Semitism accusations to terrorize academics like him.”[2]

Jhally also wrote, directed and produced the 2003 film “Peace, Propaganda and the Promised Land in which he describes a “comprehensive propaganda system” between conspiring US and Israeli political elites aimed at perpetuating false narratives and pro-Israel bias in the Israeli Palestinian conflict.[3] Jhally was also invited by SJP at the University of Massachusetts to present his film “The Occupation of the American Mind,” in which he claims, among other things, that “the  major undisputed fact” characterizing the Arab Israeli conflict is Israel’s ongoing theft of land from the Palestinians. At the same viewing, Jhally introduced his film by arguing that “Israel was waging the most successful PR campaign ever,” and that the overwhelmingly positive perception of it in the US is due to “a powerful Israeli lobby that has worked assiduously to cast Israel as a lone underdog democracy and its action as noble self-defense.”[4]
