Prof. Gutierrez has been a long-term and radical advocate of Mexican and Latin rights. He was a key player in the Brown Berets, a paramilitary organization in the late 1960’s, and at a 1969 speech he stated, “we have got to eliminate the gringo [an American not of Hispanic descent], and what I mean by that is if the worst comes to the worst, we have got to kill him.”[1] He has also said that “our devil has pale skin and blue eyes,”[2] and that his plan was “to graduate a bunch of militant radicals. After college, I hoped they would come back and kick some ass!”[3]

At the 2004 Latino Civil Rights Summit, Gutierrez claimed that, “we are the future of America. Unlike any prior generation, we now have the critical mass. We’re going to Latinize this country.”[4]
